Sincere condolences to the Wheatley family. Fortunate to have traveled with Barry to the USA in the 90's with the sports pros group. A wonderful man, generous with his knowledge and whom many of us looked up to within our industry. A true gentleman. Trevor Pugh

  • WHEATLEY (Barry):

Old Scotch Collegians notes with sadness the passing of George Barry Wheatley (Barry) (’58).

Barry started at Scotch as a boarder in 1956. A member of Stuart House, that year Barry was a member of the Athletics team and competed in the Inter School Athletics where he came 4th in the Div 2 Under 16 100 Yards and 3rd in the Under 16 Broad Jump. Barry was also a member of the Football Second XVIII and competed in the Inter House Athletics where he came 3rd in the Under 16 100 Yards and 1st in the Under 16 Broad Jump.

In 1957, Barry received Junior results in English, History, Geography, Arithmetic, Art and Woodwork. He was a Boarder Senior, and received Colours in Athletics. Barry again competed in the Inter School Athletics, where he came 2nd in the Open 100 Yards, 3rd in the Open 220 Yards and 2nd in the Open Broad Jump. He was a member of the Scotch Cricket team, but was “dogged by injuries and bad luck throughout the season. Bowled well on many occasions, but did not secure the wickets that he deserved”. Basketball was introduced for the first time at Scotch as an Inter School sport, and the members of the team (including Barry) were predominantly boarders. Barry was the highest scorer over the season (138 points) followed by Bruce Daglish (’59) (71 points) and John Wilberforce (’58) (67 points).

In 1958, Barry was a member of the Form 6A. He was promoted to full Senior, was secretary of Stuart House and so was on the Scotch House Committee, and received Colours for Football and Athletics. Barry was again selected to compete in the Inter School Athletics, coming 1st in Div 1 Broad Jump with a distance of 20 ft. Barry also came 3rd in the Open 100 Yards and 2nd in the Open Broad Jump at the Inter House Athletics, and achieved a distance of 21 ft in Broad Jump at the triangular athletics competition against YMCA and the Floreat Athletics Club. He was a member of the Cricket Team and was a “good field with a beautiful arm” and the Football 1st XVIII, where he “played excellently until hurt in the Guildford game” and was described as being “very fast (with) a beautiful kick”.

Barry’s dad Andrew Wheatley ('26) also attended Scotch College, as did his son, Brad Wheatley (’82).

We send our condolences to Julie, and to Barry's children, Brad and Jo-Anne; grandchildren, Zoe, Madi, Cass and Josh; and great-grandchild, Leo.
