  • WATSON KEITH My mate Keith wasn't a big bloke some even called him the Pony as a bit of a joke.

He had a heart that no one could deny that was bigger and stronger than any I've known. Stallions and steeds would be paled by his side.

We had many a laugh over many a wine and a friend of the like I never thought I would find. In life he was there with me and when I was in need he never declined.

I will miss you my brother but I'm sure you'll be fine up there with Scobie and Mum and others of mine.

Rest in Peace Maycie and Peter Spry and Andrea Blake

  • WATSON KEITH They crossed the Great Dividing sand,

    To race in Melbourne town,

Travelling far from the Western shores,

To sweep the Straight Six down.

    ‘Heron Bridge' was ready,

    Super fit and strong,

Once known as the ‘Bunbury Bullet',

They'd better put no foot wrong.

    The horse was pleasing Donovan,

They took things in their stride,

Keith Watson - Master of his trade,

    Agreed to take the ride.

    The team arrived at Flemington,

    Everything looking good,

    Strickland Gardner told the press,

He could win this - just touch wood.

    He drew the outside marble,

    Barrier twenty four,

But the wind blew strongly from the North,

You could ask for nothing more.

They jumped away with a flourish,

    Most down the inside track,

The rest flew along the grandstand rail,

And he settled three horses back.

‘He's a Haze' strode out in the front,

    Followed by ‘River Rough',

‘Nouvelle Star' showed up out wide,

    ‘Centaine' was finding it tough.

They charged out over the crossing,

    The inside horses led,

But the Western Champ was trotting,

Oh for a tenner on him, or better a thousand instead.

Then as they passed the racecourse clock,

Keith said ‘Come on old boy - let's go!'

Wielding the whip in his strong left hand

Well I think the rest you all know.

He raced past the gallant filly

    While ‘River Rough' battled away,

And that's how they won the Newmarket,

    On that beautiful Flemington day.

    And all around Australia,

    From Darwin down through Broome,

    From Alice Springs to Donnybrook,

    In every smoke filled room.

    From Ballarat to Mukinbud,

    From Longreach to the Bite,

They toast the sprinter ‘Heron Bridge'

Raise their stubbies to the light

And then they change the subject

And drink on through the night.

Our condolences to Lynne Ryan Keith Jr and families on the sudden and tragic passing of Keith. He will not be forgotten. Fond memories forever with love from Bill and Pam Barber, Dalley.
