Obituary Guest Book 58 Messages

RUBINO JOHN (GIOVANNI)

Born 26.6.1945 in Delia, Sicily. Passed away 16.1.2023 in Perth surrounded by his family. Devoted husband to Gail; cherished father of Brooke, Jade and Zoe; loved and respected father in law to Michele, Gavin and Emilio; adored nonno of Marco, Eva, Matteo, Xavier, Samuel, Theodore, Romeo and Gloria, and dearly loved brother of Maria, Anna and Antonella. Thank you for showering us with your immense love. We will hold our memories shared with you in our hearts and treasure them forever.

Words cannot express our overwhelming gratitude to all of the very special doctors, nurses and staff of ICU and Ward 5H at Royal Perth Hospital. The love, care and compassion you showed not only to John but to our whole family will never be forgotten.

RUBINO John (Giovanni):

It is with the greatest of sorrow and a broken heart that I farewell my beloved John. You covered me with your strength and constant love and to be loved by you was my most precious gift. Thank you for being the most devoted father to our three beautiful daughters.

"Per Sempre" Gail.

RUBINO John (Giovanni):

Papa' there is an unfillable void in our lives and it is so hard to find the words to say goodbye. You were the most beautiful father, suocero and nonno who always put us first in everything you did. You filled all of our worlds with your love, your energy, your charisma, your wisdom and your sense of humour and when we were in your presence you gave us a sense of wellbeing and safety that made nothing in life too hard to navigate. We were so lucky to have you as our guiding compass and we will cherish every moment we spent with you. All the love and guidance you have filled us with will sustain us in our days ahead. Your light shone so bright Papa' and your legacy will live on. Watch over us from above and protect us. Per sempre nei nostri cuori. Brooke, Michele, Marco, Eva and Matteo.

RUBINO John (Giovanni):

Being a daughter, son in law and grandson to you will always be a wonderful privilege. You were a best friend, mentor and a source of inspiration and strength to us, and we know this extended to the countless people who's lives you touched. Behind you leave an insurmountable void and we are forever grateful for the special bond you created with each one of us, your humour, unconditional love and the endless opportunity you provided.

Having you in our lives was the greatest of gifts and carrying on your amazing legacy will be an honour. You are an absolute legend Papa', one of the greatest.

Thank you for being the most beautiful father, father in law and Nonno, thank you for absolutely everything.

Jade, Gavin, Xavier, Samuel and Theodore.

RUBINO John (Giovanni):

Darling Papa'

There are no words that would be enough to do justice to how amazing you are.

Your energy, passion, guidance and overwhelming support for everything we have ever done has filled us with enough confidence and strength to last a lifetime. You are so loved and respected by everyone you touched. A pillar of strength, master negotiator and voice of reason. Forget one in a million, you were one in a billion.

Despite all of your achievements, family has always been the most important thing to you. To be part of your family and have your endless love has been the greatest gift one could ask for. We were so proud to call you Papa' and we will spend the rest of our days doing our best to make you proud. You will always be in our hearts guiding us.

Zoƫ, Emilio, Romeo and Gloria.

RUBINO John (Giovanni):

You have been and will always be the light of our path that will accompany us for the rest of our lives. Sei stato e sarai sempre la luce del nostro cammino che ci accompagnerĆ ' per il resto della nostra vita. Le sorelle Maria, Anna e Antonella.

John was a very successful and highly regarded businessman. However, the core of his being was family. His love of Gail, his daughters Brooke, Jade and Zoe and families and his sisters was his ā€˜guiding light'.

We share in your devastating loss, but rejoice in John's incredible achievements.

Our heartfelt sympathy. Robert (Bob), Jenny, Paul, Glen and Clare Fuller.

    RUBINO (John):

From a handshake in a carpark agreeing to a few months work, to riding the mining boom of the 2000's and ending in nearly 10 years work, my thanks to John for employing me.

John was always a well regarded leader in his journey from Rubino and Co, to United Construction and then Monadelphous and has earned the respect across the heavy engineering and mining industries Australia wide.

I wish this was only a bad dream. After much suffering, a man we loved so much has left us prematurely. We met as youths, grew up to get married and enjoyed watching our kids forge their own friendship. I will always be close to your family as if you were still with us.

From Pannawonica to Bell Bay, both on and off the construction site, and to Sicily and back, it has been an honour to be your colleague and much more for the past 51 years.

Giovanni, I will miss you like a brother.

  • RUBINO (JOHN)

Calogero Giovanni (John) Battista Rubino was born in Delia, a small agricultural town in Sicily, Italy, on 26 June 1945.

The only son, with three younger sisters, John made the tough decision to leave his tight knit family in Italy at the age of 21 in search of adventure, arriving in Australia on 6 September 1966 with two mates and just $300 in his pocket.

From 1966 to 1970 John worked throughout the country, gaining experience in a range of roles across the structural and civil sectors, from rigging and surveying, right through to project management. Eventually basing himself in Western Australia, John found himself even further from home, in Kununurra, appointed as the site manager on the Ord River Dam project.

Here John began building his empire. In partnership with three great friends, John formed Rubino and Company, which later became the successful United Construction Group (today, United Group

Limited). So reflective of the way John did business, the United partnership was built on a trusting handshake with no signed agreement between them. All four were equal partners from the outset with John Trettel, Sam Castelli, Charlie Bontempo and John ending up working successfully together for more than 26 years.

In 1987, John and his partners bought into Monadelphous, only to discover the Company was insolvent. He went on to describe this as the 'best mistake he ever made'. With an initial six month commitment to stand in as Monadelphous' Chairman and Managing Director, John ended up leading the Company for more than 30 years.

Under John's exceptional leadership, Monadelphous' fortunes turned around. The Company became a place where people were proud to come and work, that suppliers had confidence in, and that customers knew and respected. During John's time at the helm, Monadelphous was trusted with the construction and maintenance of some of the largest and most complex projects and facilities across Australia, as well as internationally. This includes projects with BHP, Rio Tinto, Woodside, Chevron, Shell, Origin, INPEX, Newcrest, South32 and Codelco, amongst others.

The Company John helped build has grown to employ more than 8,000 people across its operations in Australia, Chile, China, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines, and it has reached a market capitalisation of more than $2.5 billion, even entering the ASX100 in 2013.

John's business acumen was breathtaking, and his ability to form long-term trusting and mutually rewarding relationships is the stuff of legend. With his thick Sicilian accent and his cracking sense of humour, John was a born leader, with enormous charisma, and an ability to inspire people like no other. A mentor to many, he was incredibly generous and a winner fair and square. He was the best kind of winner, because when John won, everyone around him won. It goes without saying though that John's proudest achievement of all is much closer to home, his family - his beloved wife, three daughters and grandchildren.

John's memory will always be present in our corridors and in the stories of our people.

We will continue to do you proud, John.
