I knew Mick as my assistant coach at Sorrento Duncraig from 1993-1997 during the time when we won 5 straight Premierships. Whilst he wasn’t officially “The Coach”, anyone around the club at that stage would have known Mick as not just a driving force behind the incredible winning run we had, but as just pretty much the most outstanding person you could ever hope to meet. He took me aside a few times to just work on my overhead marking, and almost single handedly turned me into a very average footballer (an improvement. :) ).
If he’d ever had aspirations to do so, I honestly think he could have coached at a higher level, but he was so humble and unassuming that he was just happy to see the kids having a great time and loving the game. I can genuinely say he shaped my life. An amazing man. Greatly missed. Rest In Peace Mr Ray.
Condolences to the Ray Family. Fond memories of the golf days with both the Bullcreek Taverners and the Nomads.
