  • O'CONNOR (Barry):

    Dear Barry,

What a pleasure it was to have met and worked with you at IBAC over the past three years.

As many have already said, you were a gentle giant and I will always remember your first day - you came into my work area, armed with a smile and a typical WA tan, just like you’d just stepped off the beach at Scarborough.

Over the years, I learnt about your time in WA and I looked forward to our chats in the corridors, even if they were only for five minutes. I particularly enjoyed reminiscing of WA with you.

Personally I looked up to you - you were admired by many for your ability to converse with people of all ilk, even throwing in the odd joke here and there.

Overall, I’m sure we could all do with a few more five minute chats with Baz, in the corridor, or wherever.

Rest in Peace Baz - you’ll be missed.

IBAC’s Commissioner, Executive and employees are deeply saddened by the passing of Barry O’Connor. Barry joined IBAC in 2017 bringing with him a long and distinguished career in law enforcement and integrity protection. He was a valued, careful and diligent people leader and investigator, who bought a high level of professionalism to his work. Barry was recognised across IBAC as being highly collaborative, generous and kind. Barry will be sadly missed by his close colleagues and always remembered by all of us at IBAC. IBAC would like to extend its sincerest condolences to Barry’s family.

    May he Rest in Peace.

Three of the things (among many) that I miss about working with you Barry:

    1. Having deep and meaningful conversations with you where we fool ourselves that we can solve the world's problems.

    2. Watching you actually laugh at Steve's excruciating Dad jokes.

    3. Having Bertie turning to me at least once a day and say "he's such a lovely man" and me replying with "he is Bertie, he is".

Now I'll miss you, and all those things, doubly.

I had the privilege of working with Barry as my Team Leader, for the last three years and in that time I got to see his caring and kind nature, the funnier side when it came to sharing dad jokes, and his keen interest when it came to his beloved footy team. Rest in Peace Barry. You will be missed.

A great friend who we will miss and who left our midst far too early. Wonderful memories of a thoughtful man who tried and succeeded in doing the best for his family, everyone he worked with and became friends with. Our sincere condolences to Barry's family at this sad time. Enjoying a Laksa at Subiaco on a Saturday morning won't be the same without you Barry!
