O'BRIEN Julian

Obituary Guest Book 11 Messages

Dearest Dad of Justin, Damon, Felicity and Jemima. Fond Father-in-Law of Elisa, Simone, Renato and Adam. Gorgeous Gramps of Bianca, Amelia and Valentino. Beloved Brother of Tony and Gabrielle. Our talented, eccentric, larger-than-life Father. His academic and historical knowledge, his witticisms galore have taught and amused us through the years.

We miss him already.

    The Lord of Berwick Manor

The fortress was invaded and intermittently occupied beginning at some point circa 1995 -96 by a wave of 20 something wastrel interlopers - it was an extended and largely unwashed occupation of many years.

We raided his larders, took liberties with his treasure troves and laid waste to any sense of good order in the house. Julian, perhaps a kindred spirit in his own way, or simply with the wisdom of King Canute was a gracious and most interesting host. It takes a certain amount of poise to willingly (more or less) engage in conversation at 3am with a random goggled eyed youth making curry toasties in your kitchen on the perils of over taxation, brown liquor and the wonders of woodwork and relationship between eggshell density and periodontal health.

As chief amongst the occupiers I remember vividly the frequent sight of him standing in the kitchen stirring a pot of chilli or curry, with the cigarette stapled to his lips dusting whatever he had prepared with his own special seasoning - (I can best describe those meals as if Charmaine Soloman and Keith Floyd had a baby, but it was raised by the Marlboro Man).

All his children who I count as my friends and family reflect the best him, in a range of strange and unexpected permutations. I know this thrilled him and made him deeply proud of them.

Vale Julian, you were kind, gentle and weird, as only the best amongst us are.
