  • HALEY (Tony):

Farewell Tony. We first met in 1963 and it was a privilege and an honour to have known and worked with you on and off throughout our Military careers. When God made you ‘Trained Soldier’ he threw away the mould. Men like you made the Australian Army one of the greatest institutions in which to serve.

    Rest In Peace old Digger.

Although our personal relationship was short and we didn't remain in contact your influence and impact on my life was significant, greatly appreciated and gave me wonderful blueprints to follow and abide by. You taught me that simple but practical statements were all that were needed and writing over a ruler made the written word effective and powerful. Your care and wisdom saved me on many occasions and showed me that being tough and brash wasn't all! Thank you for your guidance and advice, I learnt a tremendous amount about soldiering and listening and you sent me on my way with a much better understanding of life. We were all in awe of you and our lives have been much better because of you. Thank you and rest old Warrior, I look forward to hopefully meeting you again.

You were my OC and as a young soldier I remember asking your advice. On the wall behind your desk were the Ten Principles of War. Your response to my question was "principle 8, read it young warrior". Flexibility sir was my answer. Go and be flexible young warrior was his reply. I remember this and try to practice it to this day. Rest in peace old warrior.

Tony, I will always reflect on you as the quintessential Soldier, who could inspire those around you with a glance or cough. Your time as Adjt and counselling techniques for young Officers, brought a lot of joy to those who shared the corridor, including the CO. I am humble to have served with you and the opportunity to share a few moments of your long life at the end.

Vale Tony. Your example of combining stalwart presentation and attention to detail with a wry sense of humour and an observance of protocol, both formal and informal, demonstrated to us, your younger colleagues, the most exemplary manner of progressing, both militarily and in life. In God’s time, we will all look forward to again share with you a convivial taste of the ‘nectar of the gods’. Ave atque vale.

Farewell Tony. Your professionalism, humbleness and humour is fondly remembered. Overheard apologising to a fellow soldier for an administrative oversight: "I make only one mistake a year - I have just made it!" Rest in peace.

"Once more into the breach dear friend".

God speed, on this your final journey.

Deepest sympathy to Colleen and family.

You will be sorely missed by the Young Warrior and Glennis who have so many happy and wonderful memories of your wry humour, wisdom and quick wit as we four sat in the sunlight and around the fire-pit. The world is poorer for your leaving.

    God Bless you all.
