DE MEL Leela

Obituary Guest Book 7 Messages

DE MEL LEELA Leela de Mel passed away peacefully on 23.05.2021 after a long and brave fight with liver cirrhosis.

Her boundless loyalty, generosity, and capacity for fun and mischief made the lives of her husband Michael, son Janek, family, friends, and colleagues so much richer, while her tireless work to help the marginalised will have benefited countless more. She was a constant source of brightness in our lives and we will all shine a little dimmer for the loss of her.

  • DE MEL (Leela):

Leela was a senior colleague and close friend of mine at Peradeniya in the mid 1970s. She made a lot of fun, organised parties at Ramanathan every week, and took us to various places. She is extremely helpful, understanding, kind and a very effective mentor to me. May she rest in peace.

My name is Priyanthi, and I knew Leela in our undergraduate days at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. I have not met her since then, but heard about her from mutual friends and I am certainly not at all surprised at the kind of impact that she has made in Australia. She was born to lead, and even as a young woman was courageous, smart and empathetic. She was also a lot of fun. My thoughts go out to her family, friends and colleagues. We will all leave this world sooner or later, but few of us will had done so much, or left behind such a strong legacy. Rest in Peace, Leela.

Deepest sympathies to Michael, Janek and Leela's siblings.

Leela - I will always treasure the happy times we spent at the university in Peradeniya. You were first my friend and then my teacher. Your kindness and generosity knew no bounds. I was so glad we got to meet again in Canberra and in Perth. You will be missed by all those who loved you

    May you rest in peace.

We missed her a lot. She was far far away from all of us, her good qualities, amiable nature are etched in our memory.

  • DE MEL LEELA Vale Leela We will always remember your strength, integrity and reciprocal respect. The true and fair consultation process you led was second to none. Thank you for your advocacy and for believing in us. We were blessed having your expertise advocating for the need for WA Aboriginal interpreters. Shine on Leela. Thoughts are with family, friends and colleagues.
