  • COHEN (Dr Harry):

Peter and I will miss Harry greatly. Throughout his career, Harry blazed a trail, not only as a devoted and influential obstetrician and gynaecologist in Perth, but also as an inspirational peace and environmental activist.

He was known and loved for being a strong and tireless advocate for MAPW. Harry saw that a doctor is not there simply to treat symptoms, but to seek and address the wider causes of ill-health, with the prevention and mitigation of war and violence being the most important public health imperative of our time. His lifetime of service will continue to inspire future generations of doctors, health workers, peace and environmental activists.

But aside from all this, Harry was simply a beautiful, sensitive, thoughtful and kind person. He was also a great support to all of us in the Peace movement, and a wonderful mentor to students. Harry owned a rare and powerful quality: a kind of gravitas that, quietly, asked something better of anyone he met.

"For as long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us as, We remember them."

Sympathy to his family is given at the news of his passing. I worked with Dr Harry Cohen for many years at King Edward. He was a very kind and compassionate person - so generous and gentle with his patients.

     RIP Harry.

I am learning so much about your amazing father Alinta. Some lovely memories from members of the Nedlands Labor Branch and reading all the areas he contributed to in his life - no wonder you are such a beautiful force in life. Oh I wish I had met him - but in the inspiration of a good life I will be enriched.

On behalf of Conservation Council WA, I would like to acknowledge the life and work of Dr Harry Cohen.

Harry served as President of CCWA from 1995-97, and in 2001. He was also the recipient of the 2004 Bessie Rischbieth Conservation Award. He was a fierce protector of the environment working across a range of issues. He is remembered by many in the organisation and we thank him for his profound legacy of environmental protection.

I've dined out on Harry's words when I asked him at our favourite coffee shop why he was reading a particular newspaper. With a twinkle in his eye, he said: "It pays to know your enemies."

I knew, of course, that Dr. Harry could never have had an enemy - far too lovely a human being for that.

Heartfelt condolences to June and family.

    Dear June and family,

Vicki and I always loved sharing coffee and conversations with you and Harry.

While Harry may have been a man of few words (at least in coffee shops!) his gentle and erudite nature shone brightly, as did his love for his children and grandchildren.

My sincere condolences to you June.

    Warmest regards

Our love to June, Alinta, Joel and Bass at the loss of Harry who with June contributed so much to the disadvantaged.

Their leadership and generosity in Tresillian was breathtaking as was their involvement in the environment. We have enduring memories of wonderful times shared over the years of the special friendship between Murray and Harry and June and the warm and rich relationship of the Cohen Family.

  • COHEN HARRY One of the brightest stars in a myriad of people's lives. Loved by his family, his friends, his patients, his pets, his plants and all the wild birds who used to visit him!

Invited by the Dalai Llama to speak to his audience during a visit decades ago when Harry was the Australian President of ‘International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War', an organisation that had also been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was passionate about the environment, even managing to persuade King Edward Hospital to dispense with disposable nappies and use rewashables instead for more than a year!

A mentor and a much loved and respected friend. How lucky we've all been to have you in our life! Thank you Harry.
