Obituary Guest Book 9 Messages

CHARLES "CHUCK" Passed away peacefully on 1st July 2019

He will be dearly missed for his friendship and encouragement by his comrades in the labour movement and by his many friends across Fremantle. A lifelong campaigner for the environment and for a fairer, more peaceful world through his beloved ALP, Chuck remained politically active and inspirational even in poor health. He was loved, he made us laugh, he fought the good fight, and we'll celebrate his life with a toast.

Rest in peace.

Josh Wilson MP, Simone McGurk MLA and all your comrades at Fremantle Labor

  • BONZAS (Charles):

I have known Chuck most of my life. We first met when I was 17 and looking for a place to live. He took me in, and would do so off and on for a total of 2 years over a 10-year period. And for the entire 30 years I knew him, he would always introduce me as Peter McMahon’s sister. Chuck was my crazy uncle and was always there for me. Always checking in making sure I was ok.

Chuck would sit at his kitchen table, read the newspaper, listening to Triple J, drinking the Turkish coffee mud, smoking a rollie, and throwing Tiger his ball. At night he would sit in his chair, enjoy a beer, and watch TV.

I last saw Chuck three weeks ago on a typical Friday afternoon at Clancy’s. As always when I went to Clancy’s I would give him a lift home. Sister’s of Mercy was the go-to on the stereo and as loud as the speakers could handle. Both of us singing away at the top of our lungs. I would always wait until he had his door open before I drove off, and Chuck would always text me “cheers mate”.

When ever anybody did something nice for him, he never understood why. He never felt he was worthy of good things, such as the life time membership to Labour. He didn’t think he deserved it. I told him he was wrong. He would have felt amazed and undeserving of all the reactions to his passing from friends and comrades. To that Chuck I say you are wrong, you deserve all of it and more. All of our lives were better for knowing Chuck. – Cheers mate.

  • BONZAS (Charles):

Chuck was one of the few who continually put principle before self interest. His goal was not self advancement but a genuinely better world. At times in his life he showed more courage than many people show in a lifetime, and yet mostly he lived with a simple gentleness and kindness that is increasingly rare. I will miss his combative honesty and fierce integrity, and his big laugh. I would love to think that his real legacy will be as an example to a generation of kids who refuse to accept the easy answers and work for real change in a world that desperately needs it.

  • BONZAS (Charles):

Chuck Bonzas was one of the rocks upon which the ALP rested. For many years Chuck was a driving force in the ALP’s Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee.

A Vietnam veteran himself, Chuck was resolute in his opposition to nuclear weapons and military aggression. His trademark cap and earthy manner lead many to underestimate him, a mistake few made twice. His in depth knowledge of his subjects and steely determination but likeable character made him a formidable political operator.

He left a legacy to be proud of. Vale Comrade!
