TAYLOR William

In Memoriam

TAYLOR (William):
1892 - 1917
Remembered with Honour at the Menin Gate Memorial
In Memory of my Great Uncle, Private William Taylor, born Aberdeen Scotland, son of John and Jessie Taylor. William emigrated to Australia in 1911, joined the Australian Imperial Force, 16th Infantry Battalion, in December 1915, and married Jane Payne on Australia Day, January 1916. Eight weeks later he joined his regiment, and fell at Menin Road, Ypres, on 28th September 1917. William was dearly missed by his loving wife Janie, who died in Bendigo in 1980 aged 86, who never remarried and who inserted In Memoriam the following poem in The West Australian 1920.

How many a hope lies buried here!
How many a matchless story?
That we on earth shall never hear -
Immortal in its glory.
Sleep on! These graves are great in power
Round them the world uniteth
Brave tidemarks in the darkest hour
Blest beacons of the brightest.
