Mum told us how Barbara used to have pet spiders in her youth, and they had to be careful not to squash them...... We have good memories visiting her family in our youth.

  • MAIN BARBARA Professor Barbara York Main OAM was a member of the Western Australian Museum Board of Trustees from 1982 to 1993 and a Museum Honorary Associate since 1999. Her passion for the natural environment, especially her dedication to documenting the spiders and other invertebrate inhabitants of Australia, has left a consummate scientific and literary legacy.

Hugely well-regarded by all who worked with her, she will be sorely missed.

We extend our sincere sympathy to her family.

  • MAIN BARBARA YORK The School of Biological Sciences, UWA, was very saddened to hear of the passing of Adjunct Professor York Main, OAM. Known as the Lady of the Spiders, she gained her PhD in Zoology in 1956, being the first female to do so. A quiet and graceful achiever, she worked until recently, lighting up our lives with her passion and wonder for the animal world. She will be much missed. Our thoughts are with her family.
