  • HALLAM (Dr Sylvia):

We remember Sylvia fondly as a lively friend and friend’s mother, with wide interests. Her book is still considered a landmark in understanding the aboriginal inhabitants of our continent. We send best wishes to the family.

  • HALLAM (Dr Sylvia):

I only met Sylvia late in her life but we spoke at length on matters relating to Aboriginal use of fire and her book Fire and Hearth. While Bill Gammage's book The Biggest Estate on Earth gained a wider audience, Sylvia's much earlier book set the scene for Bill's work and deserves recognition for its pioneering nature. I regretted being unable to talk her into visiting the Busselton Naturalists Club to talk about her book.

17.08.1927 - 03.06.2019 Sylvia partner of Herbert of four decades, mother of John, David, Thomas and Elizabeth passed away quietly in her sleep. She will be remembered by her children, grandchildren and extended family as a passionate, inspiring and mother.

She will be remembered by her colleagues and the community as someone of endless energy and drive. Her interests spanned archaeology, ethnography and important questions concerning fire and its impact. She sought to open up our minds to explore new possibilities. May your spirit reunite with Herbert and create boundless love and compassion.
